Athletic Brewing Company is seeking an in-house counsel to be an in-house point person on all legal matters. We are considering a wide range of experiences for this hire and compensation and job duties and expectations will fluctuate in accordance with qualifications and experience. We take enormous pride in our team culture and company growth potential, so this teammate should be prepared for a intellectually stimulating, multi-tasking, and busy day-to-day life where they are an integral part of company function. This teammate will be both a peer to management and responsible for instituting legal systems and processes in the company. They will interface with a very strong legal firm partner.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Creating and instituting company legal systems - communication, record keeping, processes, decision trees, etc.
  • Securities and Corporate Governance
  • Assist leadership with minutes, agendas, and various governance items as needed.
  • Participate in board meetings
  • Assist with fundraising documents, filings, paperwork
  • Serve as the first point of contact for the Legal Department on due diligence processes
Supply Chain and Manufacturing –
  • Support the Company’s supply chain and manufacturing initiatives by reviewing agreements, coordinating with outside counsel specialists, and acting as a liaison between those business units and the Legal Team
  • Assisting with distributor and supplier agreements
Technology and E-Commerce –
  • Assist the Technology Team and E-Commerce business unit by reviewing contracts and acting as business unit liaison to the Legal Team
  • Create, update, and maintain data privacy, information security, and product compliance policies, procedures, and guidelines
Human Resources -
  • Work with HR team to update and maintain compliant and functional company handbooks and policies
  • Assist and review record retention
  • Work with HR in supporting equity programs and 401k compliance
  • Work with HR to resolve and mitigate employment law risks, specific employee matters, hirings/terminations, etc.
  • Work with employment law specialists to confirm compliance in all matters
General Corporate Initiatives -
  • Assist marketing, sales and sports teams with third-party agreements in areas encompassing influencers, ambassadors, sponsorships, independent contractors, marketing, venues, leagues, NDAs, pre-litigation issues, insurance matters, retail leases, and intellectual property licensing
  • Respond to evolving needs of a fast-growing company, proactively solving problems and bringing issues of priority to the Legal Team
  • Proactively multitask, manage priorities, and meet timelines for multiple simultaneous projects
  • Assist in responding to requests for information and documents from internal and external partners and stakeholders
  • Assist in implementing legal initiatives, both inside the department and within the company
  • Regular touch base meetings with each member of senior leadership.

Skills and Experience:
  • 3-6 years of total legal experience
  • Member in good standing of a recognized U.S. bar
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in midsized to a large law firm or in a corporate legal department
  • Ability to balance and maintain workload, and support team members working remotely, which may include occasional travel
  • Experience in the food/beverage, retail, or direct-to-consumer industries is a plus
  • Ideally located or willing to be in Milford, CT or San Diego, CA on a monthly basis
Job Details:
  • Location: San Diego or Milford Brewery preferred, remote with ability to hybrid work at either San Diego or Milford Brewery minimum twice a month accepted.
  • Salary: Commensurate with experience - Base salary, commission, and opportunities for performance bonuses.
