Communications Manager

Reporting directly to the CMO, the Communications Manager will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop and execute Athletic Brewing Company’s multi-channel communications strategy. The Communications Manager will ensure that we are connecting with key audiences, gaining a disproportionate share of voice in the market, building a positive company image, and driving interest in our brands.

Job Responsibilities:

Media Relations

  • Build strong working relationships with international, national, regional, and trade media, including key business media outlets (WSJ, Bloomberg, Forbes, etc.)
  • Support Athletic Brewing Company executives, leaders, and other spokespeople with messaging and media training
  • Develop and maintain a real-time digital “newsroom” complete with all assets reporters need to accurately cover Athletic Brewing Company 

The Communications Manager will also work with Athletic Brewing’s domestic and international PR agencies to:

  • Manage incoming media inquiries in a timely and helpful manner
  • Monitor media coverage and ensure appropriate responses
  • Identify opportunities to expand awareness of the Athletic Brewing Company, its brands, and its community partnerships
  • Develop talking points, pitches, and press kits.
  • Coordinate interviews and photo shoots
  • Ensure consistent messaging across our global footprint

Internal Communications

  • Develop and execute an internal communications strategy for Athletic Brewing that drives awareness and engagement among team members, investors, key wholesalers, and retailers.
  • Develop and manage an internal content calendar to ensure delivery of system-wide communications around important moments – business updates, company milestones, significant wins, etc.
  • Oversee internal communications channels, including a monthly newsletter and Team Athletic Hub, ensuring a continuous stream of new content

Executive / Functional Support

  • Serve as communications lead for Bill Shufelt and John Walker, co-founders of Athletic Brewing Company, supporting their external executive profile raising (e.g. developing talking points, assisting with speech and presentation writing, etc.)
  • Evaluate and identify marquee events that Athletic Brewing should be attending or sponsoring
  • Work to secure speaking opportunities for C-suite members at key industry events and other high-profile business engagements
  • Serve as Athletic Brewing Company’s point person for key wholesaler communication initiatives, helping to ensure the messaging is consistent and supports the critical objective of strengthening our relationship with our distributors.
  • Serve as a copyeditor and/or ghostwriter for leaders as necessary

Crisis Communications

  • Serve as Athletic Brewing Company’s lead for crisis/issues planning and management
  • Work closely with executives and legal advisors to devise and execute communications strategies when crises arise
  • Proactively develop functional capabilities in this area, including working with outside agencies to create materials/playbooks to ensure we are prepared when a crisis occurs

Reputational Management

  • Curate Athletic Brewing’s presence on LinkedIn, Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, Indeed, etc.  
  • Actively engage in these platforms and respond to commentary about the company

Skills and Experience:

  • Thoughtful, strategic thinker who is capable of managing complex programs, messages, issues, and resources with multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent oral, written, editing, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Experience: 5+ years in PR and communications or related media field
  • The ideal candidate has existing relationships with U.S. press; experience with international press is a plus
  • Experience in food & beverage is preferred; knowledge of highly regulated industries is a plus

Job Details:

  • Location: This position is east coast-based. We request 1-2 days on-site in Milford, CT per month.
  • Salary: Commensurate with experience - Base salary, commission, and opportunities for performance bonuses.
